WordPress and Flash Web Development

Experience

Experience can save time, which of course means saving money. Though many inexperienced Web professionals may charge less than their more seasoned colleagues, time in the trenches makes it much easier to spot glitches, determine the best path and ultimately save money throughout a project.

Listed below are some highlights of my career, and how each set of circumstances has built my experience.

Independent Web Developer and Designer

After a cross-country move to Portland, Oregon, I am once again working independently. Though I am working on a variety of projects, including Flash/Flex production, my main focus at the moment came to me via a colleague and I have found myself thriving in the working environment of blogs. I am primarily working with small business owners to customize WordPress blogs for their specific needs. I’ve been dabbling with other blogging software (Blogger, TypePad) as well.

Bottom line: I am having a blast with the new challenge of working within blog frameworks, but still spend time with my first love, Flash/Flex.

Multimedia Specialist
Office for Research Protections
The Pennsylvania State University

I wore many hats in this role, and was known for my flexibility and willingness to learn in order to best serve the Office for Research Protections (ORP). My daily tasks ranged from videotaping and editing Brown Bag presentations to producing quarterly newsletters. I served as Webmaster for the ORP, and converted the site to a CSS-based, accessible framework built on the Senior Vice President for Research standardized design. I later added microformats to make it easier for end users to import contact information for our staff and add our educational events to their calendars. Throughout my tenure, I developed and maintained several interactive, Adobe Flash-based training modules that integrate with a separate training and protocol management system managed by another unit. I maintained the social media presence for the ORP via Facebook, Twitter and Second Life. I also produced all marketing materials for the ORP’s research compliance programs, and actively mentored other employees learning multimedia skills. Beyond my assigned duties, I served on several internal committees dedicated to making life better for faculty, staff and students. My efforts were recognized with the Senior Vice President for Research Diversity Award and the ORP’s own customer service award.

Bottom line: I love to learn new skills and will put in the effort needed for success, all with a smile on my face.

Designer/Developer
Lazerpro Digital Media Group, Inc.

My duties included creating Web graphics, Flash presentations, print materials and programming database-driven sites for a variety of client and internal projects. I also performed voiceovers for two television commercials and wrote a proposed radio script for a real estate agency. My ability to multi-task and troubleshoot was greatly appreciated in this high-volume environment. My managers and peers often complimented my team-oriented attitude and professionalism.

Bottom line: I enjoy the opportunity to be creative in a variety of ways, and meet tight deadlines.

President & CEO / Design Principal
Elmwood Media Group, LLC

I rose to the challenge of running a 3-6 person Web-oriented consulting firm while also acting as Design Principal. Specializing in digital graphic design, site flow and layout, and ColdFusion programming, I utilized my background in education to design sites that are user-friendly and intuitive, including a chemical tracking system for the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Additionally, I had the pleasure of supervising and mentoring three outstanding interns from Penn State’s IST program.

Bottom line: I understand the challenges of running a small business in tough economic times, and have the motivational skills and patience to foster a team.

Consultant I
WinMill Software

I performed graphic design and programming for a variety of Web projects, including the first iteration of GoPSUSports.com. Though hired as an intern, I was promoted to Design Lead within one month of employment. I was often asked to pinch hit for staff in other offices and prepare designs and Flash presentations on very tight deadlines.

Bottom line: I have repeatedly proven myself a valuable resource for both employers and clients.

Non-Technical Positions:
Temporary Clerical Employee at Various Staffing Agencies
Server at Various Restaurants
School Bus Cleaning Staff

Duties included most everything under the sun.

Bottom line: I can jump into new situations, blend seamlessly with a variety of corporate cultures and gracefully satisfy even the most demanding of customers. And I’m not afraid to work hard and get my hands dirty.
